Educational Workshops

Since the year 2001, the orchestra has been running a series of workshops, sponsored by many prominent organisations, most notably British Airways, The McDonalds Restaurant organisation and Seeboard in which we take sections of the orchestra into schools across Sussex.

The orchestra visits, free of charge, many schools across the region, encompassing an age range of 4 to 14. Without exception, every school fed back to us that our visits had been extremely useful and spurred many children on to consider music more formally.

These workshops were presented in such a way as to show music as fun and rewarding, whilst at the same time demonstrating the discipline that goes hand in hand with music education.
Many of these workshop culminate in children being involved in high profile events at prestigious venues, most often, this is their first ever experience of this type.

Our involvement did not stop here and we were able to present other workshops to students at sixth form level in schools and colleges where one of our composers in residence, Peter Copley held sessions on analysis and composition, which were specifically matched to future concerts by the SSO.

We also have plans to go even further into places of adult education and universities where our product and brand of education is seen as uniquely interesting and beneficial.

For this year, the orchestra has secured further funding from several quarters, but we are now realising the vast potential of this work and we are actively seeking funding from other sources to develop this strand of activity as far as we can.
